On April 28, 2023 (Friday) at 6:30 pm, Raffles College of Higher Education joined forces with RISIS to present an exquisite Spring Garden Fashion Show. The event occurred at L1 ION2, ION Orchard, featuring the collections of four talented Raffles Fashion Designers: CHOI Nakyeong, Sarah Samantha NAPITUPULU, ZHANG Yingying, and YANG Hengnuo. Adding to the allure, RISIS showcased their latest jewelry collections alongside fashion creations. Attendees were also invited to visit the exclusive RISIS boutique at ION Orchard, where they could view the newest jewelry pieces featured in the fashion show. This event was sponsored by ION Orchard, with additional support from Bobbi Brown for makeup and Jeric Salon for hairstyling. The venue itself was adorned with a captivating lighting show, though regrettably, due to time constraints, I could not witness it firsthand as we hurriedly made our way to the RISIS store.
I am grateful for the opportunity to volunteer for this remarkable fashion show, where my responsibility entailed managing the wardrobe. It was a privilege to glimpse the inner workings of a professional model's world. While some may assume modeling is an effortless task, I was astonished to witness the models walking and posing tirelessly for a continuous three-hour stretch. They maintained their professional composure flawlessly, exhibiting no signs of fatigue. Particularly noteworthy was their assistance to one another in removing the intricate hairstyles, which posed quite a challenge with their hardened hair gel and countless hair clips. My admiration for the fashion industry grew even more vital as I witnessed the dedication and collaboration of everyone involved, each playing their part to ensure the success and smooth execution of the event.
A week before the fashion show, I were tasked to assist in the model fittings at the school's design studio. Observing how Mr. Jay paired each outfit with the most suitable models was a fascinating experience. Some collections featured delicate accessories and pins, necessitating extra care when dressing the models. On the event day, I oversaw the makeup process while Jessica and Brenda supervised the hairstyling at Jeric Salon. A humorous moment ensued during our trip to the venue in a car as we witnessed the models bending their heads to avoid damaging their elaborate hairstyles.
With limited time for rehearsals, Ms. Madeleine advised the models to walk at a slower pace, ensuring the show would align with the music and prolong its duration. I followed Ms. Madeleine's cues, subtly signaling the models to enter the runway individually. As the show commenced, my heart raced with nervousness, fearing any missteps in attending to Ms. Madeleine's signals. Fortunately, everything went smoothly, with only minor imperfections, such as one model missing our cue and walking slightly faster. Nevertheless, the timing of the show remained impeccable. If I were to organize a fashion show in the future, I would prioritize timely communication with each model to avoid any such issues. Later, I led the models to the RISIS store for a private showcase.
Stepping into the RISIS store for the first time, I was captivated by the sheer beauty of their jewelry. The staff warmly welcomed us and graciously offered to store our belongings in their cabinets. Refreshments were also served, and not only were they visually appealing, but they proved to be delectable as well. As the private event drew close, our lecturers thoughtfully provided us with mineral water, ensuring we stayed hydrated.
I am grateful to my lecturer, Ms. Anisia, for recommending me as a volunteer for this event. It proved to be an invaluable learning experience. I realized that a fashion event's success relies on multiple parties' collective efforts, highlighting the significance of teamwork. Moreover, I made new friendships during the event, particularly with Brenda, Jessica, and Yingying. We often only glimpse the glamorous side of fashion shows, lasting merely fifteen minutes. However, it is crucial to acknowledge the tireless efforts and year-long preparations for organizing such an event. Here's to all those currently working or aspiring to work in the fashion industry!
