My Post-Graduation Goals

Updated: Sep 13, 2023

My name is Tan Jing Xuan. I am currently pursuing a degree in Fashion Marketing and will graduate at the end of the year. After graduation, my goal is to get employed in Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. I have three dream jobs: Fashion Marketer, Creative Director, and Entrepreneur (I will not let the interviewers know that I want to be self-employed!).

I have always enjoyed drawing and painting since I was a child. My parents recognized my talent and sent me to an art center. My first fashion memory is admiring my mother as she dressed for an outing. I got inspired and started to make paper dresses for my Barbie doll. Since then, I have wished to pursue a career in fashion.

My parents, like many other Asian parents, were concerned and attempted to stop me from enrolling in Fashion college. I tried everything I could to persuade them, and I eventually proved to them that I was capable and highly passionate. As my life motto goes, I believe in 99% hard work than 1% of talent. I want to spend it doing what I enjoy rather than just surviving, as I only live once. Throughout this journey, I am grateful for the support of my family, friends, and lecturers.

I believe there is no such thing as a useless job in the world. The fashion industry is no exception. From a Fashion Marketer who assists with the operations and promotion of a Fashion business to a Creative Director who shapes the final concept and vision of a brand, there is a role for everyone. Every job is essential and ensures that the Fashion industry runs smoothly. It is merely that these positions will allow me to maximise my talents and strengths.

In order to achieve my goals, I conducted a self SWOT analysis to better understand myself:

I identified some of the skills I require to address my weaknesses and achieve my goals:

The changes that I should undertake:

  • Learn Video Editing

  • Stay Healthy (Sleep Early & Exercise More)

  • Time Management (Can be Improved)

  • Develop a Reading Habit

  • Save Money

  • Build Connections

  • Work Harder (More Confidence & Mentally-Stronger)

After I graduate, I hope to accomplish my goal. All of this is possible with my potential, enthusiasm, and college knowledge base pushing me further. Finally, I would like to share a quote from Steve Jobs: "Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle."
